Choosing Your Birth Location in Zurich: A Doula’s Guide to Finding the Right Fit

As a doula supporting families across Zurich, one of the biggest conversations I have with expecting parents is not how they want to give birth, but where. Your birth environment can shape how supported, calm, and confident you feel throughout labour and into the postpartum period.

The good news is that Zurich offers genuinely excellent options for birth: highly equipped hospitals, nurturing birth houses, and well-supported home birth care. There is no single “best” place to give birth, only the place that feels safest and most aligned for you.

Hospital Birth in Zurich

Many families choose hospital birth for the reassurance of immediate medical support, pain relief options, and specialist care if needed.

Some of the most well-known maternity hospitals in Zurich include:

The public hospitals tend to be a wonderful fit for families wanting strong medical infrastructure, access to NICU support, or care for higher-risk pregnancies. The private clinics often appeal to parents seeking a quieter environment, continuity with their OB, and upgraded postpartum comfort.

One thing I appreciate about Zurich hospitals is that many now actively support physiological birth approaches alongside medical care. For example, Department of Obstetrics at USZ offers midwife-led birth pathways and supports water birth, movement during labour, and complementary therapies.

As a doula, I often remind families that hospital birth does not automatically mean a highly medicalised experience. Your preparation, support team, and care providers matter enormously.

Birth Houses (Geburtshäuser)

For low-risk pregnancies, birth houses can offer an incredibly calm, personal, and deeply supported experience.

Options in Zurich include The Delphys Geburtshaus & Geburtshaus Zollikerberg.

Birth houses are midwife-led environments designed around physiological birth. Care is typically highly continuous, meaning you often know the midwives supporting you before labour begins. The atmosphere tends to feel more like a peaceful retreat than a clinical setting.

Families are often drawn to birth houses because they value:

  • Minimal intervention

  • Freedom to move and labour intuitively

  • Water birth options

  • Longer postpartum stays

  • A more holistic approach to birth and recovery

Many Zurich birth houses, like Zollikerberg, are also located close to hospitals in case transfer becomes necessary.

In my experience, parents who choose a Geburtshaus often describe feeling more rested, more emotionally supported, and more confident entering parenthood.

Home Birth in Zurich

Home birth is another beautiful and well-supported option in Switzerland for healthy, low-risk pregnancies.

Switzerland has a strong midwifery system, and many experienced independent midwives offer comprehensive home birth care throughout Zurich and surrounding areas.

Some local midwifery practices include:

For some families, home feels like the safest place emotionally. Labour can unfold more naturally when you are in familiar surroundings, uninterrupted, eating your own food, and moving freely.

Of course, home birth is not about avoiding medical care at all costs. It is about choosing the right level of care for a healthy pregnancy while still having clear transfer pathways if needed.

Understanding Swiss Insurance for Birth

One of the most reassuring things for international families in Switzerland is that basic health insurance (Grundversicherung) covers maternity care very well.

Under basic insurance, costs are generally covered for:

  • Hospital birth in the general ward

  • Birth centre birth (if the centre is canton-approved)

  • Home birth with a registered midwife

  • Prenatal and postpartum midwifery care

Importantly, maternity care is usually exempt from deductible and co-pay costs under Swiss basic insurance.

Private and Semi-Private Insurance Upgrades

Where families often see differences is in the postpartum hospital experience.

With only basic insurance, you will usually stay in a shared room in the general ward.

Many families in Zurich choose to add supplementary insurance (Zusatzversicherung) before pregnancy in order to access:

  • Private or semi-private rooms

  • Choice of doctor or OB

  • Access to private clinics

  • Additional comfort and partner accommodation

Private clinics such as Klinik Hirslanden and Hirslanden Klinik - Klinik Im Park offer upgraded maternity stays with private rooms and hotel-style postpartum care.

It is important to know that supplementary insurance usually needs to be arranged before pregnancy begins, as insurers may not accept new applications once you are already pregnant.

Some hospitals also allow self-pay upgrades for private rooms if available, though costs can be significant.

A Lesser-Known Option: Wochenbett in a Geburtshaus After Hospital Birth

One of my favourite things about the Swiss system is that postpartum care can be wonderfully flexible.

Many parents do not realise that you can sometimes choose to spend your Wochenbett recovery period in a birth house even if you gave birth in hospital.

This can be an incredible middle ground:

  • Hospital birth for medical reassurance

  • Geburtshaus postpartum care for rest, breastfeeding support, nourishing meals, and hands-on recovery

Some birth centres offer postpartum stays and support regardless of where your baby was born.

For families who feel overwhelmed by the idea of going straight home after birth, especially expats without nearby family support, this can be a truly valuable option.

So… Which Birth Location Is “Best”?

After years of supporting births, I honestly believe the best birthplace is the one where you feel:

  • Safe

  • Heard

  • Relaxed

  • Informed

  • Supported

For some women, that is a high-level hospital with epidural access nearby. For others, it is a candlelit Geburtshaus room with familiar midwives. For others still, it is labouring quietly at home in their own space.

Birth works best when a woman feels secure enough to surrender to the process. The “right” location is the one that helps you do exactly that.
